Chapter Eight

Sam was startled out of his reverie when the kitchen door slammed and Laura appeared. Only this time, to his surprise, a different Laura.

Her signature white cotton man-tailored shirt was gone. In its place, she wore a sheer green-and-white-flowered blouse. Underneath the blouse, lush curves peeked through a white lacy bra. Her hair was brushed to one side, and a wisp flirted with her eyes. The worn jeans and sturdy boots she wore were a study in contradiction. But there was a glow about her.

Rather than looking like a fierce rancher defending her territory, Laura’s softer appearance was decidedly eye-catching and feminine. Whatever had caused the change or whichever persona she’d intended to portray, she’d wound up looking like a mixture of feisty femininity and a warrior ready to take on the world.

He may have made a vow not to touch Laura, but sure as hell, he wanted to touch her now. He wanted to taste her lips, inhale her fresh scent and lose himself in her loveliness. He tore his gaze away from the vein throbbing in her slender neck. “Going somewhere?”

“Yes. I decided telephone calls are for the birds. I’m going into Montgomery to show the tax receipts to Pete.”

Sam made a decision of his own. Considering the considerable change in her appearance, Laura would probably have men falling all over themselves after one good look. If she intended to go into town looking like a candy confection, he was going to go along to keep an eye on her. “Count me in,” he said firmly. “I’d like to have a talk with Pete myself. Maybe get a better fix on what Hansen might be up to now.”

“What makes you think he’d be stupid enough to try something else now?” She waved the packet of tax receipts in front of his nose. “I’m not coming back until the Lazy E’s tax records are clean.”

Sam nodded, but as far as he was concerned, Laura wasn’t out of the woods yet. Not after he suspected the rumor about the legality of her adoption had Hansen’s fingerprints all over it. “There’s the rumor about your adoption, for one.”

She peered at him suspiciously. “Has Pete told you something he hasn’t told me?”

“No. Just a feeling.” A feeling he couldn’t explain, but one that had the hairs prickling on the back of his neck. He learned long ago not to ignore this feeling. It had kept him out of danger more than once.

“Then as far as I’m concerned, it’s only a stupid rumor,” Laura said firmly. “There was nothing wrong with my adoption. Dad told me and Mom he took care of everything.”

“Probably,” Sam said to placate her. Considering the bumpy road Laura’s luck had taken for the past two years, he wasn’t at all sure probably fit the bill. “I’ll just go over to the county courthouse and ask around. Stay a step ahead of Hansen.”

Laura’s lips curled in disdain at the mention of Hansen. “You really think that man’s behind the adoption rumor?”

“I could be wrong, but yes.
